Cyberpaper : The Disappearance of the Middle Tier

At Oracle we are building scalable shared disk clusters. This technology creates a single-system image on commodity hardware with unlimited headroom. Many of the current reasons for running application logic on different computers from their databases will be replaced by many good reasons for running them on the same machines in a cluster. The resulting ubiquity of the database server makes it an attractive platform for offering other services such as application servers and file servers, and will ultimately change and simplify the deployment and operation of the next generation of applications.
